I just saw this a couple of nights ago, a friend gave me the link. Looks very interesting, indeed. I can't wait to see it. It looks very interetsing to me, and I love the animation and the music on the trailer. I like the style-very unique in comparison to what is generally watched my most people.
If anyone is looking for the trailer I know for a fact of somewhere you can stream it from, but I haven't tried the download, so I don't know if it works.
http://www.sparx.com/frameset.htm?values=FR_1024
If that doesn't work go to www.sparx.com and type Molly Star Racer in the search field, click on the little thumbnail, click on the videos option, and view it at whatever quality you wish. I chose what I'm assuming is high quality (haute).

Wow, this is such a refreshing change from all the other stuff here.. and loving it too! The way she moves is just so absolutely adorable. The monsters too are like Pokemon but probably have meaner hearts. :) Since it's a trailer and oft trailers don't make sense, I won't comment about the flow of the story. Hehehe.

I saw this a year ago but I don't think I got a chance to comment. It's great! I especially loved the oceans and those scary gothic girls, hehe. This is a French production, right? I'm part French so, Je suis Kelly!... hehe, that was pitiful. Anyway. I have a few questions: will this series come to the U.S.? Will its original language be French? (I'm just asking since Totally Spies! was French I think and it was made into English first.) Oy... 2 years is a crazy long time. =/ Keep it up. My only suggestions is to fix the run cycle and that the song ended before she turned off the CD player, but that's it!

JACKSON! - 2002-08-20 21:23:00
Wow, this looks AWESOME! It's the first time I've seen a CG version of traditional anime, so the first thing that comes to mind for me is "Jet Grind Radio". Except that "Molly" is infinitely superior. Since this is all CG you should REALLY think about marketing the idea of a "Molly, Star Racer" video game to Sony or Nintendo. If you took these characters and ship designs and turned them into a combination RPG/racing game you'd have an instant hit!
Hooray for Molly! I look forward to seeing this show on TV sometime soon!

Let me see...

The movie looks like a mixture of openings from Vandread, Gatekeeper and DiGi Charat (Panyo Panyo series).

Character:
Ed from Cowboy Bebop...obviously! But others already noticed that :p

But I don't care! It looks G-R-E-A-T! :D

I've got one question:
Are the rocky islands in the sea also in full 3d? Or are they flat polygons with a texture on it?

Good stuff, Mitch. I especially love the backgrounds,
the colors, the effects animations, and the sense
of "depth" in the movement and camerawork.

The only technical "giveaway" in any given frame
is the loss of the ink line wherever geometry
accidentally intersects (check her left leg in
the fifth shot, for example -- the cloth drifts
into her leg, causing the loss of the ink line
where the geometry intersects). This is a minor
quibble, though.

Inspiring work!

Molly was produced entirely with Maya.

There was almost NO touchups on the renderings,
I mean less than 0.5 percent, just on some broken frame in order not to re-render. (booh, the lazy frenchmen!)
The toon rendering itself is done with just one single pass.
There is NO faking or post tweaking, it is the actual toon shader we use in production at SPARX*.
we used after effects for the compositing.
there is a very little 2D animations for some effects and for the non-moving characters (less than 5 percent) because it is a teaser, the timing was very short and because we can draw too. >:-)

the final serie will be 100 percent 3D.

For the rest don't expect me to reveal any of our crazy frenchy tips... MUHAHAHAHAHAhahaha!

en
Tom Winnicki - 2002-03-09 00:14:00
So Mitch, you designed the cel-shader... it produced some impressive results. Was there a lot of touchup involved or is the output we see in the movie straight from the cel-shader?
Do you have any general tips for someone who would like to code one up, I'd like to write one (very basic for start) just for practice (yes I know C++).

Since you worked on this production, can you please give some official word on what software packages were used and what each one was used for?

Yoman - 2002-03-04 19:06:00
Yo Andy,
Everyone has the right to voice his opinion, but please, once and for all, stop telling lies - you only make yourself ridiculous:

1/ There is absolutely no 3D cell shading whatsoever in GHOST IN THE SHELLL. Everything was done in traditional animation in Japan and Korea. On the contrary that film is one of the most amazing display of traditional 2D craftsmanship (with Magnetic Rose) one can possibly see. The only use of 3D in the production of that film was in the end sequence where the warehouse was modelized. But that was only to get the perspectives right in the layout. Final layouts where all painted traditionally. And of course ALL THE ANIMATION was hand drawn!

2/Regarding BLOOD, some camera mapping was used for backgrounds, and some 3D was used for some vehicles, but that is all!!!

So, please Andy, learn about 2D animation, or at least read a few art-books, and please watch these movies for real...

This said, congratulation again to the MOLLY team for their great cell-shading work. I've been working for sometime in this business, and it's the first time I see such a poignant result.

Some illiterate quoted "understanding Chaos" as another example of successful cell shading - that was a pretty pathetic statement. Terence Walker is a joke. The poor quality of his work demonstrates just how hard it is to make good cell-shading animation: his work is ugly and totally lifeless (check out for yourselves on his website).

Peace to all the fans of quality animation everywhere.

Thanks to Shawn Fumo for raising the bar on this debate.

Long live Molly!

Long live Anime!

;)

I just want to step in and say than kyou to the people who dedicated thier time to both post thier opinions and thier views on the whole animation genre. I also want to say that even though I disagree with PuyoGirl I'm still glad she decided to voice in her opinions on the matter. I'm always more than happy to read harsh opinions on things that I enjoy, it helps pull me back into a reality a bit and see things from a different angle.

You guys are awesome and I thoroughly enjoyed reading all of your posts, immense respect from me. Shawm Fumo you sir are inspirational, thanks so much for providing us with some extremely informative feedback.

Andy Ray - 2002-03-02 00:56:00
Yoman : A little 3D there and here?
For God's sake, it used 3D shaded animation almost everywhere! The whole anime concept was almost gone.

GITS was definitely crap. Looked lifeless and boring, and even the style of drawing characters was different. I dont understand how people ate it up. Probably because you are new to the genre and havent seen much of the REAL anime.

Thats another disadvantage of 3D cel shade in the industry, - it confuses people and leads them in totally weird directions regarding anime.

en
Shawn Fumo - 2002-02-28 23:57:00
I guess I might as well chime in on all of this as well. :)

As far as the art style itself, I do like it. I've been disappointed by a lot 3D stuff out there because it looked too stiff and didn't have any style. And some of the stuff like Zoids which have vehicles in a state half-way between regular 3d and toon-shaded IMHO looks worse than either full 2d or shiny 3d. Things like Geneshaft lately have done a much better job at integrated 2d and 3d (at least for ships and such).

But this one seems to really succeed as an entirely 3d, but flatshaded show. Understanding Chaos looked ok in stills, but from what I saw of the trailer, its low budget was very obvious when any motion happened. ShadowSkin looks better though. But the higher budget of Molly is very apparant. As someone else mentioned, it is above the quality of many Japanese TV shows, more like an OVA (even though there has been some quite high-quality tv shows as of late like Arjuna, Geneshaft, Scryed, and Figure 17).

But IMO, everyone seems a bit too obsessed with how much or little like anime it is. It borrows certain conventions from it, but has style of its own. Keep in mind that the reverse happens as well. The baka-hammer stuff in Kodocha (Child's Toy) and the exagerated violence that happens to Keitaro in Love Hina are all very Loony-Toonish. The style of the default eyes is different from what is usually done in anime.

In the url below, it sounds like they also took inspiration from Mike Mignola, which I can see in some of the designs:
http://www.savtheworld.com/kidscreen.html

However, the ghostly mother figure does definitely looks like one of Leiji Matsumoto's designs (Captain Harlock, Starblazers, etc.).

What is really going to depend on is how interesting the plot and action is. That crash scene does seem like it was taken from the Star Wars Ep1, but it could also be argued that SW itself took from Wacky Races a bit, which the Molly people also say in that are taking from in the article...

One other interesting thing is that several of the Cartoon Network originals like Dextor's Laboritory and Powerpuff Girls have both borrowed pretty extensively from some of the stylings used in anime. In general I think it has worked very well, while maintaining their own style. It is also interesting to note that PPG is shown in Japan and is fairly popular.

In fact, several of the characters in Molly reminded me more of the style of Samurai Jack (especially that wizard type guy with the weird hat). Actually, it as if most of the characters are drawn in different styles from each other, which is interesting... Fits a bit with the Wacky Races theme, since all those characters were from different shows.

As far as FLCL goes, I don't see that much similarities besides the opening title sequence (with the font of the logo), and the fact that they both have a digital look. FLCL has purposely faded colors, the character designs are different (Molly reminds me more of something like Jungle wa itsumo Hale nochi Guu). FLCL only has like two scenes with flatshaded 3d characters that I know of (the bullit-time rotation ones).

And speaking of that, flatshaded 3d for actual characters is still very rare in anime. Generally it is just used for background elements or machines. Ghost in the Shell was actually traditionally painted on cells. Some 3d like the green wireframes and console text was overlayed on top. There were a couple of scenes (like where the two mecha tank things battle each other in the big hall) where more 3d was used, but those were pretty obviously different from the rest of the movie.

I think Blood is a digital movie, but not in the 3d sense. Almost all recently made anime, the last several Disney movies, and probably Iron Giant and most of the newer american cartoon tv series are done digital. This doesn't mean 3d, though. It just means that they take drawings and scan them in and color them on the computer (or sometimes do it all from scratch on the computer), and is done with computer stylus pens instead of mice. In that way it is not all that different from traditional animation except you have more control over color, panning, special effects, and have wonderous things like Undo. These may or may not look like traditional cell animation depending how how they do it. Shows like Love Hina with its super-bright colors are obviously digital, while some others are less obvious. However, I think Jin-Roh is probably the last completely non-digital anime movie we'll see for quite a while now (and many make the mistake of thinking it is digital).

As far as originality goes, there is some original anime out there. There is also tons and tons of self-referential stuff. Someone mentioned clones of Evangelion. This is true, but it is also true that Evangelion wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for Gundam starting the real popularity of people sitting in cockpits of giant robots. And giant robots themselves were around even before Gundam. Sailor Moon is just another in a long line of Magical Girl series, perhaps combined with the old Sentai fighting shows (footage of which was used for Power Rangers battles).

Miyazaki has always been very critical of the general anime industry, saying it is unoriginal, too violent and sexist, etc. He generally tries to distance his work from most of the others shows in Japan. However, while Miyazaki has a very good style and story-telling (and I love his stuff), in a way a lot of his stuff is similar to itself. On the other hand, some of the really original things coming out of Ghibli like My Neighbors the Yamadas were actually made by Takahata.

I am one that subscribes to the opinion that all "anime" means is animation from Japan. It has no rule with regards to style or plot. A lot of anime have similar themes and styles, but there are some that don't, and they are as much anime as the others. And western animation may borrow from the east here and there, but it still isn't "anime" by its very definition. I can appreciate when things are very original (like when Serial Experiments: Lain came out), but I will generally enjoy something if I feel like it is well done, even if it has all been done before (like Love Hina).

By being away from Japan, the fans of anime tend to have a more skewed view of it all being art, while many in Japan have as low a view of it as we do of our own cartoons. Over there you see it all on TV everyday and are saturated with the clones and most people don't buy the DVDs, while we have to in order to see them. Not to mention all of the merchandising going on, as much as what happens with Disney movies over here, with pads, lunchboxes, toys, plushies, backpacks, books, and all of that. For the most part it is very finacially driven over there, with lots of shows that just milk things. Still, there is a lot of great things, and even the bad stuff tends to have at least some amount depth to it. But we're only starting to get into more variety of things in the US now. Most sports and girls shows (and things like cooking or gambling oriented stuff) haven't made it over here yet...

BTW, that x-rated video of Evangelion that is floating around the net is NOT official. It is just something that some fans made themselves. That's why the quality is so bad on it...

As it stands now, I pretty much like any style of animation as long as it seems to work. Stop-motion puppets (like Rudolph or Nightmare Before Christmas), live puppets (Muppets, Dark Crystal), claymation (Wallace & Grommit), regular 3D (like Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Reboot), photorealistic 3D (Final Fantasy), claymation-ish 3D (50% Gray), flat 3D (Molly), painted cell, or digital cell. They all have certain advantages and disadvantages, but they can all achieve similar things, and can all be done well or horribly.

3D has too often been too stiff or trying to be photorealistic when the next hardware and software update will immediately make it look up to date. Trying to look photorealistic is IMO in one way futile unless it really DOES look photorealistic. Thus it is good to instead try to be stylized (I think that's why Toy Story still looks ok). Doing 3D to look like 2D can have advantages, but in some cases you may have to put so much work into making it look like 2D that it'd be better to just make it 2D in the first place. Like if you try trying to have a really rough drawn look. But stuff is getting better... The less 3D is viewed as just a gimmick to be thrown in for no reason, the better off we'll be. Is already starting to happen in some cases.

Molly's style may not be for everyone, but it does give me hope that if regular 2D does get more and more replaced by 3D, that it can still be nice and stylized as opposed to something that just screams "3D". As far as the plot goes, we'll just have to wait and see. I'll just judge it based on if it seems fun, not how much or little it is like most anime. And another show of theirs on their site called Thomas & Comp looks very interesting, and has a distinctive style of its own. As far as that running loop at the end, it does stay exactly the same the whole time, but I have seen things done like that during the end songs of various anime shows before. Sometimes for budget, but I'd guess it is also sometimes done for a sense of stability in a music video sort of way. Judging by the time they put into it, I gather they could have modified it if they'd really wanted to.

Lastly, I figure the more that people start borrowing some anime concepts, the more chance there is that either people will view cartoons as capable of having more adult themes, or that anime will have less of a stereotype of only being for adults, or maybe even both. It is actually interesting that France doesn't have more animation, considering that comic books are fairly popular there, both their own comics, and Japanese manga. If you think there is a lot of anime in Japan, it is nothing compared to the sheer volume of manga. It massively dwarfs even the US comic industry. A lot of bad stories get filtered out in the comic stage, with the most popular becoming cartoons, and the more popular cartoons making it over to us... Of course a lot of the truely original manga isn't popular enough to actually make it to an animated stage. But that's another story...

This page is becoming a real discussion forum on anime and 3D, some people have a lot of spare time :)

First, let's sort things out: 1) “Ghost in the shell” and “Blood” may use a bit of 3D here and there, but they were made in traditional animation. People who don't know what they're talking about should probably not at all (that’s for Andy). 2) Saying that you’re an anime lover but that both “Ghost” and “Blood” are crap, is a also really really big contradiction. One wonders if that person ever saw them…

Coming back to Molly, the main subject of discussion here : I personally think it's absolutely superb. Before criticising technique - 2D, 3D, cel-shading, traditional - one should look at what's under their eyes: the designs, the mecha, the colours, the backgrounds...
2D or 3D, who cares in the end.

Now, what impresses me most in that short trailer is that the directors were able to capture the very spirit of anime. And I'm not talking about visuals, I'm talking about the energy, the fun that comes through.

So I say go on guys, don’t worry if there’s one or two Disney-addicts in the crowd, we just can’t wait to see the series! ^_^

Cel-shading--love it or hate it. The comments range anywhere from, "greatest thing i've ever seen," to, "it looks different... kill it!" I'm cautious about this type of animation because it's gotten so trendy in recent years, and if most artists can't discover inspiration themselves, they latch on to someone else's idea and leech it for all it's worth.

andy ray - 2002-02-27 22:32:00
PuyoGirl, I agree with you.

I totally hate all of that flat-shaded "anime".

Anime is, and always has been, ANIMATED BY HAND.
that's one of the things that make it so special...

I hated Ghost In The Shell movie and Blood The Last Vampire because they were just cheap 3D animated trash. I have the Ghost In The Shell manga ( a must-have ) and I love it, but the movie was crap.

and you're right about westerners stealing ideas from the Japanese. Do you know Terrence Walker? He did a Lightwave cel shaded Understanding Chaos which WAS actually pretty okay for 3D cel stuff. ( studioartfx.com ). Right now he's making "Shadowskin" and its a total Guyver rip-off!

I love anime but I dont like the fact that its growing in popularity in America/UK so much...these guys will try to make a buck of it, and will pervert the whole genre.

Fucking capitalists.

But they'll never reach the level, nor the style of Ninja Scroll, Street Fighter 2 : Animated Movie, Berserk, Guyver, Devilman, etc...I could go on for hours, hehe

Well, from an English perspective I'd like to remind you that this is where people voice 'opinions' and not proven fact. So to say that PuyoGirl shouldn't voice her comments if she has nothing nice to say is a little bit 'controlling'. Everyone's free to say what they like.

As for myself, I think that the piece looks energetic but have only too often encountered animated series which go over the top with enthusiasm and action in the intro and fail to uphold any equivalent motivation in the actual story. (time will tell)

And talking about the story, when you've watched the clip one too many times you'll probably be able to piece together some kind of narrative. And of course this is my opinion, but it looks like she's a racer taking after her 'late' mother who she dreams about. I got this much from the bit where she's flying through the clouds and heading towards her mum (and her wreckage?) followed by the customary monochrome images of her as a child.

Also, what's wrong with animation in general? One of you said that they're just out for a quick buck! Big deal, that's the reason why there's competition - it's healthy. Companies have to maintain quality and creativity otherwise they won't last, to speculate that it's not worthy of viewing because it's not art is almost saying, "I'm not going to watch TV until we all live in a utopia and all the cartoons are made just for me and my pleasure".

It seems that very few realise Bruce Timm's Batman anmated series as being anything special. That's maybe due to the exposure the superhero genre gets (especially in the west) and the way it's marketed for the younger audiences. Next time just stop and watch the it for the story, 'cinematography' and mood - you may very well be surprised, it's more intellectulal then you'd first give any story about a man in tights credit for.

And one final point. Has anyone actually been in touch with these guys? No? Well I have, and they used Maya so bang goes any ideas about it being a 'typical' Lightwave cel shader. And really ... Flash?! (Okay okay, - if you really think they used Flash then maybe for the title.)

:p

What The! This is one of the SUPER GREAT Animation I have ever seen in my life. WANT more of it. The way they can compose this animation so will between 2D and 3D and also one of the every important element, music. Is like the animation is moving together with the music and there is a story in it to. Its not just a meaningless animation anymore. Its a simple, clean and colourful animation. I LOVE IT!!!

Yukio777 - 2002-02-25 06:52:00
"King Peanut." Wow, I've never been called that in my life (and I've been called a lot of things!), but I like it!

I don't know if you've been to Japan, but if you haven't, it is well worth the visit, if only to see just how prevalent manga and anime are over there and how widely the quality varies. There are shows that air on morning TV that are less than 12 minutes long and look like it took not much longer than that to make (Super Gals is one that unfortunately made its smell known in the West and so is a 'miniature' version of 'Ah, My Goddess'). The evening shows are usually pretty low quality too, though occasionally there is one that will knock your socks off. Theatrical releases and OAVs are usually the impressive ones, mainly because they can make a ton of money, but they are pretty infrequent. The stuff that gets picked up over _here_ (North America) by fansubbing and digisubbing groups tend to be the creme-de-la-creme and, in my opinion, it fools people into thinking that Japanese animation is of a much higher calibre than it actually is. It's kind of sickening, actually, when you notice how stunningly crappy most (and I mean _most_) anime is if you live in Japan and when you actually bother to notice.

Also, it's pretty hard to deny that Japanese anime is ruled by trends. After Gainax's Evangelion came out, I remember for about two years all you saw were series about living, breathing battle robots that went sometimes berzerk. Gainax, which made Evangelion (and other influential shows, such as FLCL and Wings of Honneamise) even made an x-rated version of Evangelion for no other reason than they knew that someone else was going to do it. Sailor Moon begat more terrifyingly awful shows in Japan than I care to remember. We don't usually see that in North America (thank heavens!)

So all I'm saying is that a) Molly Star Racer could _easily_ be better than the average Japanese show, b) it is obviously influenced by Japanese cartoon shows but no more so than every show that's produced in Japan, c) the French are no less qualified to produce real 'anime' than the Japanese. Finally, keep in mind that this trailer is _short_, includes no bg music, no sound effects, no dialogue, and no storyline to speak of, so there's not much to 'peel away' and much less to discover once everything's been peeled. I just suggest you calm down and wait the two short (hah!) years for this show to get produced. It could well turn out to be a dreadful pile of crud, in which case I won't watch it. But it could end up being very entertaining. At the moment, I would simply say it looks 'very interesting'. Personally, I suggest patience before judgement. But what do I know?

PuyoGirl - 2002-02-24 20:33:00
I'll admit that it is *just* a cartoon. Apologies. I can live with just calling it a "cartoon." ^_^

And Yukio, talk about snobbery with your "corrections" on the definitions of a "cartoon" and "anime." Talk about king of the peanuts. lol. You could have also thrown in "herikoputa" as meaning helicopter. Do you honestly think I'd throw in my two cents without being informed? Jeez. Actually, if you deny that anime (what *we* know as anime, you genius)has a particular editing style and similar designs (for the most part), then you're making quite an uninformed and unrealistic statement.

If you want me to be completely honest, I think Japanese animated films/series aren't "just as bad" as American/Eurotrash cartoons. Yes, Japanese animation does have its black sheep, but nowhere near is it as mindless as American animation (and I totally give in to the fact that ALL animation is out to make a buck).

Yes, it doesn't pretend to be Mononoke or even Future Boy, but I've seen things "inspired" by anime a ZILLION times. Sometimes, they're done well--inspiration is a good thing! And sometimes, it's EMBARRASSING to see tripe like Molly tout its stuff. I bet you can name all of its cheap sources with your eyes closed--but you strip away the layers of tired, borrowed materials and what are you left with? Simple: A show that tells you its creators saw some masterpiece like "Laputa" and instead of saying "We want to create something of that calibur," they said "We want THAT!!!!!" There's a huge difference. If you can't spot it, then you're playing dumb.
And I know why you're all truly upset with me. You guys hate it that I'm just one more critic who has chosen to seperate low-brow from high-brow "art." You got me there. It can be pretty scummy at times to always see works through the artist's microscope, but we raise the bar for what mindless America calls "entertainment."

-PG

ps- Yukio, you're an absolute FOUNTAIN-HEAD of information. What taste you have as well! *rolls eyes* I could SO get you a job at a production company so you can help pump out the next "Cinderella 3" "Rocky 8" and "Lethal Weapon 7." lol

Yukio777 - 2002-02-21 23:11:00
Interesting tidbits:
  • The 'podracer' has the growling face of a cute bunny rabbit on the front of one of its 'nacelles'
  • The tarp covering the podracer at the beginning says 'mori-' (or Molly) in Japanese katakana (who was it that said it was aimed for an Americanize audience, I wonder...? My bet is that it will sell just as well in Japan as it will overseas)
  • The music is the first segment of a 'medley' of hits from Japanese pop idol Ayumi Hamasaki and is a remix of 'Monochrome' (the medley goes by the name 'Euro Mega Mix (Y&Co. Mix)')
  • This is an update of the earlier 'Oban Racers'. The French producers had wanted this first series to be more 'anime-like' but decided wouldn't sell in Europe and the US (this was before the rise in popularity of Pokemon, Dragon Ball, &c.)
  • The characters are essentially unchanged from the first series, except in visual style, though Molly appears to be completely new.
  • The pilot has won several awards for its editing, which is a little cheeky, since it is pretty likely that the 'pilot' was designed, storyboarded and rendered with the music of Ayumi Hamasaki in mind. Very little 'editting' needed, really.

And just a note to the few 'anime snobs' in the peanut gallery: 'anime' is Japanese for 'animation', just like 'pasokon' is 'personal computer' and 'kurachiku' is 'classical music'. In other words, it's a CARTOON. These cartoons do not constitute a unique art form and are only significantly different from their American counterparts in the depth of their storylines only (ie. quality in Japanese anime varies as broadly as it does in Europe and North America). Also, since the 1940s Japanese cartoons have been based on the repetition and extension of other successful cartoons. There are some amazing Japanese series out there, to be sure, but if you look back through the oeuvre of even Hayao Miyazaki you will find the most dreadful crap. This cartoon may not be Mononoke Hime, but I don't think it pretends to be. So give it a rest until 2004. Then draw your knives.

No matter what anyone says, this anime (Anime is 'animation', Magna is a form of a comic) is truly exceptional.

The music is great, no, that's putting it too lightly. It's beyond excellent, it got that beat and it makes you feel something inside you... brr sends a shiver up my spine.

The graphic is simple, not complex, which is good. Often, people go for complex images but always end up in the wrong direction. It's so simple that it's remarkable, believe me.

If you haven't downloaded this trailer yet, do it now! I'm starving for the next one.

To some people, yes, it is not 'real anime', like Akira. Of course, don't forget, Akira was exceptional! By the way, when you go to your local video store, ask for Akira, the subbed version. It's a must-see.

Man, 2004? I can't really wait that long.

PuyoGirl, you can't just disregard it and insult it all you want. Yes, I'm aware of the fact that you have a freedom of speech, but if you don't like it, don't comment on it.

It looks like it was made by an otaku as well. Disgusting. Who was the genius who decided that Hamasaki music would go with anime? Fricking rocket scientist! Nothing is original, either. NOTHING! And not for one second do I beleive it's anything other than flat-shaded 3D. Back to the drawing board guys.

Most excellent work. The animation is too smooth for anime, should have used tweening (or whatever the technique is called). Terrance Walker achieved a pretty good effect with his "Understanding Chaos" short. Pretty soon I'll want to do something like this and I know what I'll keep watching for inspiration. I played this like 20 times now and I want to watch it again. Yes, I'm a bit of an anime freak. Does anybody know what software packages were used in the production of "Molly, Star Racer"?

[I think I smelled a tiny bit of BGC in the part where Molly flies through the clouds, am I right? It's a cool shot, I'll use it also.]

Brilliant! I am particularly found of the rabbits flapping on the windshield ;-P Molly has charisma, the characters are great, the race concept is cool, so this anime will be BIG across the universe :-)

Moi je trouve que ca arrache tout. Juste, je suis dégouté de devoir attendre 2004 pour enfin pouvoir le voir.
En tout cas, ca fait vraiment tres plaisir de voir une production francaise qui va cartonner a cout sur ;o)

ok, this vid automatically gets a 10 because it has my babe ayu singing in it :D. anyway this video uses the Euro Mega-Mix Y&Co.Mix and its awesome it uses some of her best songs shes ever did, one of em which you hear in the vid is called boys & girls also the mix is acually 9mins long and not 2mins. the animation is also very nice too, you can tell that the creators are huge fans of anime & manga also you definetly see that they put all they effort into what they created, the cg animation for example the sort of you would see in FLCL thats why it looks so familier to viewers who have already seen it and also the cg animation used in vandread too and it gives off a funky futuristic look thats used in jet set radio on the dreamcast. the only real problem i have with this video is that the quality is terrible, if only they could have put up a bigger version and im talking about at least 50-60mb so that it has much better picture quality and a hell of alot better sound than the scratchy sound you get with the normal 320x240 version.

OnDez, I suppose the whole of Star Wars is an entirely original concept then? Ever seen "Lensman", for one?

Although I was a bit put off at first by the pseudo-anime look, it seemed by the end to spawn its own unique style.
The snappy editing was great. Too many CG animations drag on like a snail through treacle. This definately left me wanting more.(^_^)

I loved it! Great character design (esp. the villians!), great sync with the music (which was very catchy), wonderful look overall. I don't think they'll have a problem with Lucas, since they're obviously not pods, just spaceships skimming the water. Lucas isn't the first to think of that, nor obviously the last. If they'd been pods with detached engines that strictly skimmed the ground, then you'd have a point. The "Sav The World" radio tower at the beginning was harmless - they ARE French, after all (the founder's name is Yeatman-Eiffel).

I can't wait for this to become a full-length show. I agree they need to fix her run cycle, but the rest looks good. A true anime trailer - tells a story, intros the characters and world, and leaves a sense of anticipation.

Very pretty shading, some lovely character design and a nice tune in a crazy japanese kind of way. Good take-off of the whole anime thing tho I get the feeling George Lucas will want to have words about the whole pod-race thing...talk about plagiarism. In fact the bits they've nicked from Phantom Menace (and RKO's opening sequence - not really subverting just by sticking the bloody eiffel tower in there) are the only decent bits in the whole thing. The rest of the animation is just plain crap - Molly's run cycle at the end is laughable - which is a terrible shame coz it could have been so good. =[

Yes, very inspirational. The blend of styles is seamless, some very nice compositing. The backgrounds are colorful and apealing. The animation is spot on anime, you can see the key frames perfectly. I like the art direccion the most, it makes for interesting and original characters . Go Molly! Can't wait for more! Also, gotta get the soundtrack. I love Jpop!
